Levi Strauss was a theorist who
came up with the idea that films contain binary opposites. He
argued that all
narratives could be reduced down to binary opposites. He suggested that this links heavily with out ideological values. For
example in most films you get a hero/good character therefore you get a
villain/bad character.
Good Bad
However, this theory can be challenged. For example there is a new TV drama called 'Dexter' about a police man, who is the good character. But the twist in the story is he kills only the murders that he comes across, making his also a bad guy. The reason it has challenged the theory is because the same character is been the good guy but also the bad guy at the same time. This doesn't fit into Levis theory of two different people, one good and one bad.
The reason i have chosen to look at Levi Strauss theory is because it will be relevant in my short film. In my short film the main character Bernard is going to try and make fiends by been friendly, making him the good character. But when he tries to make friends the other birds, they are mean to him and hit him or laugh at him making those birds bad characters.
